Babies sleeping with eyes wide open can be a problem in some rare cases. This may be due to facial nerve damage or improper growth of facial nerve inside the mother’s womb. There are many medical reasons why a baby might be sleeping with eyes open. Some of them conclude tumors and thyroid problems. The parents should consult a doctor immediately if the baby sleeps with its eyes open for a very long period, or if there is any dryness or irritation caused to the baby’s eyes because of sleeping with its eyes open.

Nocturnal lagophthalmos in babies make their parents feel scared as this is a very unusual way of sleeping. If seeing the baby sleeping with its eyes open is disturbing, the parents can just stroke the eyelids of the baby gently which will make them close their eyes while sleeping. This is not necessary but can be done by parents who feel scared or worried. This cycle of sleeping with eyes open should subside when the baby turns one year or more. If this way of sleeping doesn’t stop even after one or one and half year it is advisable to meet the medical advisor for further steps.

Nocturnal lagophthalmus’s symptoms are dryness of eyes and irritability. This is caused due to infections and medical negligence during surgery in the case of adults, and it may be hereditary in case of babies. This can be easily treated with non-surgical treatments, and in a mild case, it can be treated with home remedies. For babies, it is advisable to go for eye drops or fake tears or eye creams. They can also do eye massages gently without distressing the baby. If sleeping with eyes open is due to any medical condition like tumor or thyroid problems proper treatment should be done by choosing an expert in this field.v
